Are there any characters in comics who could be considered the subterranean, jungle-dwelling or cave-dwelling counterparts to Superman?
Aquaman is the aquatic version of Superman. He has a set of powers that came about from adaptation to his environment.
Subterranian meaning underground-dwelling.
I wouldn't consider Tarzan a counterpart- he has a set of senses heightened to near superhuman levels, but he is no way on par with Superman.
In the real world, if you dwelled in the jungle you would have senses heightened to near-superhuman levels.Does Superman have any subterranean, jungle-dwelling or cave-dwelling counterparts? Not to my knowledge.
The closest you're going to get to that, that's in DCU continuity, is with Kamandi, the last boy. He lives in a dystopian future 2000 years from now, where the human race is nearly extinct and where humanized animals have taken over.
And the only reason Kamandi is on a par with Superman is because he's a lineal descendant of him--either his son or grandson, depending on which writer you refer to.
In terms of current characters, the big problem is this: Superman, in current continuity, gets his powers mainly from the difference in sunlight (dim red sun, versus brighter yellow sun) and gravity (Krypton having more gravity than Earth).
While conditions like this can exist in those environments (there's radiation from minerals underground in some places here on Earth, for example), the big question is going to be--How do you get these people _civilized_ if they're evolving in those environments and possibly developing powers? They have to have a civilization of some sort in order to have the technology to get out there in space and meet other species.
I'm not saying this is impossible--I'm saying that creating new characters like this is going to need creativity and top-notch writing skills.
In addition, what you may want to do is look up some Silver Age DCU "Alternative Supermen". The most common ones are Daxamites (like Mon-el in the _Legion of Super-Heroes_ or Sodam Yat in the current _Green Lantern_ comics). There are others if you go _further back_ into the actual Silver Age comics. Namely "Ultraa" (not a typo, it had both As), a Superman-analog who landed in the Australian outback and was raised by Aborigines, and "Andrew Meda", a visitor from a world "in the Andromeda galaxy" from the old _Action Comics_ who was as powerful as Superman _in spite of_ his being terminally ill.
Point is, in the right environment, any species that evolves _enough_ could become a "superman-type" on our world. You just have to figure out the Details. ^__^
