What does the letter "S" on Superman's costume stand for?

Everyone would just say "Logically, S stands for Superman", but if you have watched the movie a little carefully, you will know that it's not true. At the beginning of the movie, Jor-El and other Kryptonians had that same "S" logo, and they had no idea that Kal-El will be called Superman. Besides that, the same Kal-El/Clark/Superman didn't choose that alias for himself, but it was Lois Lane who called him Superman in the newspapers. Obviously, that S logo existed before Superman. So, what did that "S" letter really stand for? What does the letter "S" on Superman's costume stand for?It was the "S" shape of his family crestWhat does the letter "S" on Superman's costume stand for?Everyone on Krypton had a different family insignia. The S was Jor-El's family's house crest. It didn't stand for anything. To them, it was just a design. If you notice at the beginning of the movie, when Zod, Ursa, and Non are on trial with the Council of Elders before being placed in the Phantom zone, you'll notice different crests on the members.

Holy crap I just realized I'm a nerd.
