As for Magic Mountain, it adds a new element of thrill to the ride, so that it will attract more guests. A teenage girl was on the ride one day when the track completely broke. She started free falling. A piece of track came down as well, and ended up hitting her. She lost both her legs in the accident, but thankfully she lived. I'm pretty sure they just made the track safer.
